9th, 10th, and 11th grade students in the Maine South HS Orchestra program enroll in this orchestra. Many students take private lessons.
Focus on the following:
Technical Skill development: healthy, supported and comfortable posture; beautiful bow holds; comfortable and functional left hand function; vibrato and beautiful tone; different bow strokes (legato, detache, staccato, spiccato, martele, etc.); clean and clear intonation.
Musical Skill Development: develop mature listening skills (other parts of the orchestra/ensemble); learning to interact with a conductor and other ensemble members; phrase structure; introduction to forms, etc.
Perform different genres of music: classical, fiddle, pop, rock, hip-hop, and other genres.
Focus both on large ensemble performance, and small chamber groups (groups of 3-5 students).
